Southern Word, an area organization committed to increasing literacy through poetry and spoken word, will send Poet lecturers to classrooms this year to teach the fundamentals poetic performance. "Students participating in spoken word programs report improvement in their reading and writing skills, increased self鈥恈onfidence, and a new sense of community among their peers and teachers. Educators report a clear rise in interest among students, a more youth鈥恉riven learning environment, and evidence of greater social and academic confidence among students."

Engl 3110: Creative Writing Short Story

Catalog Description:听A workshop in short story writing. The course examines the techniques and problems involved in writing the short story and places emphasis on the use of the senses and the writing about the experience of living.

Engl 4910: Advanced Story Writing

 Catalog Description:听An advanced workshop in story writing, focusing on student work. The course covers such elements of a story as plot, character development, and scene-making. Students learn about these elements through the process of writing their own stories and studying stories by professional writers.

 Catalog Description:听A workshop in writing poetry. The course examines the techniques involved in writing poetry, placing emphasis on the writing of varied poetic types and relating poetry to other forms of art.

Engl 4920:听 Advanced Poetry Writing

 Catalog Description:听An advanced workshop in poetry writing, focusing on student work. The course covers such elements of poetry as rhythm, lineation, image-making, and figurative language. Students learn about these elements through the process of writing their own poems, studying poems by professionals, and delivering oral reports.
